The Do’s and Don’ts of Belt Wearing
From skinny and sequined to wide and leathery, belts come in a myriad of sizes and styles. Once merely considered a must-have item for keeping pants from falling down, belts have grown to become an essential fashion accessory. Wholesale Belts >>
It’s very important to put thought into what kind of belt you wear and how you wear it. Belts draw attention to one of the areas of your body that you’re probably most self-conscious about: your waist. As a result, the type of belt you choose can play a part in how thick or thin you look.
To avoid committing common belt blunders, review the following do’s and don’ts of belt wearing.
Do’s:
Invest in a few versatile belts that could combine with a variety of outfits. Some basic belts you’ll want to have include cream, black, and dark brown belts.
If you have a full figure, stick with dark colored belts because they can give your torso a slimmer appearance.
The general rule of thumb is that you match the color of your belt with the color of your shoes.
If you’re wearing gold jewelry, wear a belt with a gold buckle. If you’re wearing silver jewelry, wear a belt with a silver buckle. The same goes for purses. If you’re using a purse with metal components, wear a belt with a buckle made of the same type of metal.
If you want to own just one belt, opt for a black belt with a silver buckle. A black belt with a silver buckle is the most versatile type of belt. It looks great with formal as well as casual styles of clothing.
Make sure to wear a belt that’s actually your size. If you wear a belt that’s smaller, no matter how pretty it is, you’ll end up with a muffin top.
Wide leg pants look good paired with a belt, which gives them a more feminine shape.
If you have a thick torso, wear a wide belt around the thinnest part of your waist to create a slimmer appearance.
Pair a cocktail dress with a plain, everyday belt to pull it off in casual situations.
If you have a long torso, wear a wide belt in a color that contrasts your top and matches your bottom.
Don’ts:
Don’t wear a shiny, flashy belt with a glamorous cocktail dress. A shiny, flashy belt would make a glamorous cocktail dress look excessive.
Don’t use the belt that comes with a belted trench coat. Use a more stylish belt that will spice the coat up instead.
Don’t wear belts with suspenders unless you want to look like Pee-Wee Herman.
Don’t tighten a belt to the point that it constricts your body.
Don’t shy away from wearing a belt just because you have a big belly. If worn correctly, a belt can actually make your waist look slimmer.
Don’t wear a belt on your waistline if you have a large belly or post-baby belly. Wear it on your hips instead so it draws attention away from your tummy.
Don’t wear wide, thick belts if you have a very slim figure. Wear a skinny belt that is proportionate with your figure instead.
