How to Find the Right Skirt for Your Body Type

January 30th, 2010 | Tags:

Some women have bombshell figures that look great in just about any outfit.  However, mere mortals like us have to dress very carefully to avoid drawing attention to the wrong features.  Skirts are a particularly tricky article of clothing that requires great fashion sense to pull off.  Here are some tips that will help you choose the right skirt for your body type.

Skirts for Women Who Lack Curves

If you wish you had a curvier figure, look no further than calf-length skirts and A-lined skirts that are fitted and have a cinched waist.  Skirts with pockets can also accentuate your hips.  If you wear a pencil skirt, pair it with a belt to accentuate your waistline.  Skirts made with print fabrics are also ideal for bringing out your womanly shape.

Skirts for Plus-Sized Women

Plus-sized women look best in A-lined, high-waist skirts.  They should avoid wearing skirts with lots of ruffles or skirts with too many layers in order to minimize bulk.  The last thing you want is for a skirt to make you look larger than you really are.  Black skirts are ideal for plus-sized women because they create a slimmer appearance.

Skirts for Apple-Shaped Women

Apple-shaped women have large, round tummies, so should avoid wearing skirts that bring attention to the waists.  Skirts in print fabrics or with pleats should also be avoided because they tend to emphasize the stomach area.  Skirts in dark colors, like navy and black, have a slimming effect.  Apple-sized women should wear elegant tops and accessories to draw attention to their top halves instead of their stomachs.

Skirts for Pear-Shaped Women

Pear-shaped women, or women with heavy lower halves, look best in A-lined skirts with a defined waist.  A-lined skirts are slimming because they take attention away from the hips and focus on the waist.  A-lined skirts in dark colors are best for pear-shaped women because they draw attention away from the heavy lower part of your body.

Skirts for Women with Rectangular Bodies

Women with rectangular bodies have an undefined waist, slender legs, and an upper torso and lower torso that are equal in width.  Women with rectangular bodies should avoid skirts with gathered waists because they make the waist have an even thicker appearance.  Skirts with a dropped waist are ideal because they make you look more slender.

Skirts for Women with Inverted Triangle-Shaped Bodies

Women with inverted triangle-shaped bodies are top-heavy and have slim legs and narrow hips.  Hip-hugging pencil skirts are best for women with inverted triangle-shaped bodies because they accentuate curves and flaunt slender legs.

Skirts for Petites and Tall Women

If you are a petite woman, don’t wear a skirt that cuts off below the knee.  Shorter skirts will help you look taller, particularly if you wear them with high heels.  Tall women look best in skirts that cut off slightly below the knee.  Tall women with long legs look best in skirts with a straight, simple design.  They don’t have to wear skirts with an attention-getting design because they can already make plenty of a fashion statement by flaunting their long legs.

There are women thin, but high, it’s an eternal problem. I have such problem. Shops what selsl things of the big sizes do not approach to me, and usual shops too. I order clothes through the Internet, like custom jeans made to a measure. And my friends too. Well that there are fashionable things made for ‘non-standard’ people, it solves a problem a little bit. But the problem exists.

i think this is a pretty nice “how to” for finding the right product when it is time to find a new skirt that fits to your style and person.

would be nice if there will be some moe how to´s in the future.

I use only skirts and dresses, let me start from it. I know my figure type, my adv and disadv, so i can buy a skirt even by Internet and won’t do a mistake. but. Time after time I try new style and see: hm, no, not that. I think the main one is to feel comfortable. Even if plus-sized woman feel great in “not her skirt” – why not! ))

Wow, I never realized how difficult it is for women to choose the right skirts for their body types. As I read through the different types, I tried to visualize what you were talking about and it seems right. Some body types are just better with some skirts than with others. Great post.

It is in fact that difficult to find the right skirt, we are actually looking into a new style of screen printed skirts, in heavy fabric, the right fabric and the right color separation can make the trick, we consider ourselves trend setters.
